We're looking for a companion horse. Preferably a mare over 10 years old and over 14hh. Must be able to live out 24/7.

At the moment I'm sure you'll find something suitable easily. Otherwise, have you considered rehoming a horse from the IHWT?

never thought of the IHWT, will look into that

Does it have to be a mare?? A gelding may be more straight forward to keep with her.

Doesn't have to be a mare, but it'd be preferable. Need something that will boss her a bit!

Em well that isn't a good idea if she is likely to be a bit bossy!

The IHWT or the ICPSA is a great idea, you get company for the lovely MIA and another horse gets a good home. I know they sometimes have horses to be rehomed in the ICPSA in Longford,

My first thought would be the ISPCA or IHWT. With the way the horse market is you could buy anything...but you may run into problems if you have to sell it sometime (ya never know!) at least the Rescues will take the horse back if something were to go wrong.
Plus its always a super feeling giving a horse a second chance!
(ETA - love the little pony Spirit on the ISPCA website at the Victor Dowling Centre, Mallow - such a cutie!!)

A friend of a friend was telling me that they were at the last sales in goffs or gorsebridge,, i cant remember which one,,
Some unsold lots were just left in their stalls and were literally given away, nothing wrong with them, it was just that there owners couldnt afford to keep them. really sad :(

 so sad
I agree, try IHWT or ISPCA, there are lots of ponies and horses looking for homes that would be 100% happy to live out all the time. Would be great to give a rescue a loving home

Good luck in your search, you should have no problem finding a suitable companion. After the wet year we had many horses are on a waiting list to be slaughtered, you may get to save one from being made into burgers.

Not to take from the ISPCA or IHWT but if you can't find a suitable one there I have a gelding. He's around 13yrs, 16hh and gets along well with other horses - though I've never had him with a mare only geldings. He's very easy going though.

thanks for all your help guys :)
we'd love to take in a rescue horse and give someone a second chance and we're checking that out at the moment. There are so many horses being sold for next to nothing at the moment, but it's going to take a while to find someone right for us I think. fingers crossed that they're out there!
