Has anyone ever heard of one of these or know where i might get one. I have an ordinary rugby pelham for showing but busby loves to tongue the bit as soon as it goes in her mouth. Thought if i could get a happy mouth one she might not be so bothered!!!!

Does it have to be a Rugby Pelham? http://www.4dobbin.com/productDetail.aspx?product_id=1490
As far as i know they don`t make a happy mouth rugby - will check catalogue tomorrow.

You can get rugby pelhams made up if you like. I don't think they would do happy mouths, but I have had a jointed one made up with a very short shank - basically the nearest thing I could get to a snaffle, as the horse was very easy in her mouth and I didn't want to cause her to overbend or get upset by using a double.
Just checked catalogue and they do not make a happy mouth rugby.

Thanks for all the replies guys!! Alibear i use the rugby pelham coz it looks most like a double bridle when showing, think she would freak if i actually tried to use one on her
Guenhwyfar be great if ya could send me a pic of the bit you have, would it be softer with the black rubber? (i'm a disaster with bits :blushing:)
Napoles, where did you get your one made???
:thankyou::thankyou:

Goodwins might be able to sort you out with something - they order and made things for me all the time...

I used to use a rugby pelham for showing until one day! Forgot my bridle at a show :blushing: and had to borrow a double bridle.
I used a happy mouth jointed pelham, My old horse loved it and Ozzy goes so well in it too. Another option perhaps ?

My new horse - he's 5- was placed high each time out this year in the light-weights with the happy mouth pelham. I havent seen anyone marked down because of it. Napoles would know for sure :)

I have used a normal pelham and a rugby showing last year and I got a few good placings with them. It's better than a horse not accepting the double and being a messer. Napoles would know for sure though
Some judges won't mind a pelham, some will. A very traditional judge will mark down for not being in a double which is correct for a hunter - mine are always shown in a double unless they have a severe dislike to them. Have you ever tried your horse in a double? Many that you think won't like them do.

Yup - I use a jointed rugby pelham, a jointed pelham (both specially made to have the joint and with extra short shanks as horses go very well in snaffles so don't need the extra poll pressure) or a double - depending on how they go with them. If they are inobtrusive and tidy and the horses go well in them, then you should be fine with either.
Personally I don't really like the big rubber pelhams - I always think they look big and clunky. My local tack shop O'Brien's Saddlery sends off to have the bits made up to whatever specs I want.

Agreed - I put a double on one of my four year olds last year and he was actually happiest in that and I do prefer how they look to pelhams.

Yep - i can only remember 1 pony that we had to use a pelham on and she basically had a very flabby tounge and didnt have room in her mouth for a double - bar her i think everything else accepted a double no problem. And they do look so much better tham a pelham.

Yup -if the bits fit the mouth ok, then you should just be able to ride off the snaffle. Was funny though - I thought he would be the fussiest in his mouth and would get bothered about the two bits, but it was the opposite! :)

I'd be afraid she would swallow her tongue or something. She is a fussy cow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She nearly 17 now n only ever had a snaffle really :blushing:
