Still not 100% sure on which stock I should be looking for?? I want one that is versatile for all disciplines!

Was looking at this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/White-Ready-Tied-Stock_W0QQitemZ310109187150QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_S porting_Goods_Equestrian_Clothing_MJ?hash=item3101 09187150&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1688|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A13 18

Hi SN, Ive got a few of them. Plain white ones are very versatile so its good to have one of those. They are compulsary for riding club cross country. for SJ and dressage its up to you whether you wear a tie or stock but certain jackets are more correct with a stock and others with a tie. (Bob or Napoles can fill you in on that!)

Ive a lovely cream one with green and blue check for SJ that goes with my navy jacket. A plain white that goes with everything, a cream silk one that goes with my black dressage jacket and a navy tie that matches my tweed jacket.

Get a good quality one whatever you do as the cheaper ones are quite thin and they end up looking awful and go narrow and stringy looking. Also if you use it for XC / hunting a quality one made from good fabric will do a lot more to protect your neck.

Id recommend the IV horse ones they are lovely quality if you have a look in homstead they have a brilliant variety of stocks and brands.

I would steer clear of ready tied stocks. They are more of a cosmetic things than a safety item. Holmestead tend to have a good range of stocks although can be abit pricey. I'm sure one of the shopping queens can direct you to a good website.

If you are handy with a sewing machine they are easily made. My mum is in the process of making us some different ones at the moment.

On the XC front I agree with Karen - ready tied should not be allowed
If I were you I go for the normal traditional ones

Oh seriously!!! I had NO idea - help Bob/Napoles!! But you dont have to wear one for SJ right? Cause I have a show shirt already but I dont have my stock yet so can I do SJ without one??

Great -thanks for the recommendation and all the info! I might just head to Holmstead and ask their advice instead of buying something I havent seen on line. As you can probably tell from one of my other posts under 'Riding Club' I'm nervous as hell about getting this stuff wrong........

Most of them come with a little instruction thing. A little practice and you will have it. It is just important to have it good and tight, but obviously so you can still breathe. If you ever see me hanging about come to me. I am resident stock tier!

For ShowJumping you are fine :)
Your short shirt will be perfect

I'll leave the pure showing advice to our resident guru ;)
With tweed is a tie not a stock, I *think* if a navy jacket is worn you can wear a stock and that is ony in very special circumstances;

Napoles will reveal all

yea just buy a good quality white one, the Racesafe ones are good quality cotton.

You can use a white one for everything.

I don't like pretied ones either!

its not too hard to try SN dont worry - someone will help you on the day!. if you have a black or navy jacket for SJ I would usually wear a stock (but never ready tied). If anything were to happen it protects your neck more than a tie would (once fell off badly head first so I can testify to that!). But for SJ you can wear either. I think if you wear a hacking (tweed jacket), a tie is more correct than a stock.

I would def go up to homestead or TRI and have a look they have loads of them. The likes of IV horse ones and those are about 20-30 euro but last forever mine still looks brand new.

Navy jacket - cream stock
Black jacket - white stock
Tweed (hacking) jacket - coloured stock (We use tattersall check) or tie (usually dark with lighter spots)

ME too! :D My pet hate is where people just do the one knot and then fold the stock hanging down and stick a pin in it!!! Aaargh! It looks horrible!
SN - it's really easy when you get used to it - it's just two knots really. Get someone to show you how to tie a proper hunting stock a few times and you'll be flying.
All above is correct - coloured stock i.e. navy, green etc with tweed jackets and cream or white with navy or black jackets. :)
