    Millstreet August Show?!?

Only just read last saturday's Irish Field today and as such only saw the article on Green Glens vs SJI over next year's August International Show.

If i read the article and understood it correctly, as an SJI member i could face a fine and/or suspension if i compete and am good enough to win a class worth x amount of money.
From what i understood from the article the Duggan family are fighting this and insisting on holding the show and infact say that they have read the SJI rules etc and claim that they cannot suspend/fine people for participatin in unaffiliated shows.
The SJI countered saying that it depended on purse sizes or something, so basically what i understand from it is that if you compete and win a certain sized purse you could be in trouble if you are an SJI member. Would i be reading correctly?

This all stems from Millstreet and the Duggans not being affiliated to the SJI (or something to do with the SJI insurance i think), it's supposed to be a similar situation to the RDS.

Can anyone exlain this better to me? It would be such a massive blow to show jumping in this country (IMO) if the RDS and Millstreet are lost as they are pretty the highlights of my summer and the two shows i would most love to compete at if i can sometime...

Dunno if i'd want to risk suspension or a fine though, not that i'd be in contention for a purse i don't think,

One final question does anyone know if the same fine/suspension will apply to the RDS? Or is that a seperate situation?

Sorry this is very long winded and as i'm sure you can tell i am kind of confused by the whole thing... One thing i do know is that SJI members who competed at the RDS this summer (2009) did not receive SJI points for their clear rounds.

If these arguments continue i reckon irreperable damage will be done to our sport,

Age is about mind over matter - If you don't mind, it doesn't matter!

  2. Theres a long standing dispute between the Duggans and SJI for nearly 2 years now - stems from an insurance claim that a competitor submitted having being injured at the show. Duggans, from what i read in the field, refuse to pay it, stating that competitors competing at an SJI affiliated show, such was their show at the time, well, the competitor is covered by SJI Insurance. SJI are refusing to pay up, claiming Duggans' insurance should cover it - and vice versa, Duggans are refusing to pay...in light of that, they didnt hold the normal summer show that would usually run after the RDS. (Note - this is as i read it in the Field at the time - i have no other knowledge nor insight into the case so i wont be quoted on the info i've published)

I rem a few years ago in a dispute between cavan and the sji, cavan ran a few unafiliated shows, with prize money in excess of what the sji allow apparently and the same scenario erupted, with the sji threatening to fine members for part-taking..i don't know the outcome of it, i do know a friend of mine competed at it in the grand prix and both she and her owner got a letter from the sjai - both of ignored it and carried on regardless. i think her owner actually rang the sjai and told them if they objected and wished to fine him, to do so through his solicitor..it never happened!

up to yourself really, i wouldnt lose too much sleep over it, but i can imagine the show itself will prob get a large enough turnout, millstreet is always a popular venue.

  3. i've just re-read your post..Regarding the RDS..Not sure why you think its linked to the Millstreet situation? The RDS showjumping is of course affiliated and run under SJI Rules - it has to be! Points are and were awarded at it for double clear rounds, as per the normal - SJI tickets had to be lodged with the started prior to competing. Only classes where points were not awarded are the usual such as the Amatuers and i think possibly the Equitation class. Other than that, apart from the fact its the RDS - its a normal SJI show run under SJI rules.
